Sound & Strings

With Experience & Sensitivity

The sensitive system of bridge, sound post, tailpiece, fingerboard and neck, as well as the strings and their material and tension, offers astounding possibilities for working on the sound of a specific instrument. It is a playing field of many variables that influence and interact with each other. This applies equally to modern and historically set-up instruments. Due to less standardized bridge styles and wood species, the latter can offer astonishing room for shaping in sound.

With an understanding of the systematics and sensorical sensitivity, I am happy to take care of the tonal optimization of your instrument, gladly in joint effort and with your bow. It is not necessary to change an entire system – often, it’s the small changes that already help.

I maintain a carefully selected range of strings from excellent manufacturers. For gut strings in particular, I stock a finely graded assortment of plain, twisted, and wound strings.

Consultation

I offer advice in person or by phone on strings and set-up questions, especially in the area of gut strings and historical set-up. While this cannot replace individual adjustment on an instrument, it can provide an initial overview and point of reference. For instruments with a special string length or string angle that require particular string gauges, I can take care of special orders directly with the manufacturers upon request.

Please feel free to contact me to make an appointment.

You are also welcome to register your email address and I will inform you in good time before placing larger orders of new strings and ask about your current demand.
